Work Permit

Looking for a job offer or an LMIA?

For a foreign national to become eligible to work in Canada, one would need a work permit.

‘Visitors are persons who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, and are legally authorized to enter Canada to:

  • visit Canada on holiday (vacation),
  • visit family,
  • Conduct business, etc.

Visitors are restricted in length of stay and subject to various conditions.’

Canada has a huge labor shortage. Immigration to Canada can be a great job opportunity for foreign nationals, but the process is complicated. Unless you hire an expert licensed immigration consultant to help you, you shouldn’t even think about immigrating to Canada.

Due to economic reasons, Canada has huge shortage of labor. Most foreign nationals who have a skill set desired by Canadian employers can obtain an employment offer and work permit within a few weeks with the help of an expert licensed immigration consultant in Canada.

Over the last decade, Canada has faced a serious issue with labor force shortages resulting from an aging population and declining birth rates. The labor market in Canada is facing a supply problem creating thousands of job opportunities for foreign nationals. The Canadian government estimates that 1,5 million skilled foreign workers will be needed over the next 3 years to fill job vacancies in industries such as construction, technology and other fields with shortages of Canadian workers.

Canada’s economy is booming and there is a high demand for qualified foreign nationals who are ready and willing to come to Canada. However, this recruitment process can seem challenging to those who are new to it. This blog will provide a synopsis of the Canadian immigration process based on the appropriate documentation that needs to be obtained.

A work permit application in Canada requires an approval from a labor market to hire the foreigner worker. This approval is called an LMIA, or Labor Market Impact Assessment.

You must have a legitimate job offer from an employer in Canada before you can apply for a work permit. The employer must first obtain a positive LMIA from Service Canada, confirming that the position is needed by the Canadian labor market, before they can submit an application for a work permit. If the LMIA application is approved then the foreign worker will be eligible to receive a work permit.

A Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is an assessment of the impact on Canadian labor markets of the temporary entry of a foreign worker. A positive LMIA allows the employer to sponsor a foreign worker in certain circumstances. It is only issued if it is determined that hiring a foreign worker will not have a negative impact on other Canadian workers.

The process of applying for a work permit or LMIA can be difficult and overwhelming. But with the right information and support, you can successfully navigate through this difficult process.

Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a way to certify that your job offer with the PR employer meets one of the conditions under which you qualify for a work permit. The LMIA is most commonly required if you are: hiring a foreign worker to fill a job where there is a shortage of Canadians willing and qualified to do this type of work; hiring a foreign worker through the Canadian experience class stream; or hiring a foreign worker through an international agreement by providing your employer with a work permit.

Work permit is issued based on a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) or an Offer of employment from an LMIA-exempt employer. With LMIA, the employer gets an authority to hire a temporary worker. ESDC assesses the impact of hiring a foreign worker for the job position on local employment rate. Before the LMIA expires the foreign national needs to apply for the work permit.
